What if Facebook takes control of our life?

Let’s think about it… Facebook has the capability to control who we see and know what we want to see on the Internet. 87 million of people’s information starting from our email addresses until our phone battery power are possessed by Facebook. Master of ad targeting is who they are, in fact, 89% of $40 billion revenue comes from digital advertisements. Fortunately, they are limited to a certain boundary by the privacy policy.

Today’s topic is about my speculation and deep thoughts arising from how impactful social medias are especially Facebook in our life and health wellbeing.

The New Economics Foundation (NEF) stated out the 5 ways to mental capital throughout life are

Connect

  • Connect with people around you, not digitally.

Be active

  • Step outside, find physical activity you enjoy.

Take notice

  • Be aware of the world around you and what you are feeling.

Keep learning

  • Anything aside from the internet😀e.g. fix a bike.

Give

  • Do something nice for a friend, or stranger. Volunteer, etc.

One of Facebook top vision is “Connecting the world”, which it has successfully develop and implement in its platform. For us Facebook users, what creepy tragedies have you experienced in the Internet? Is it when you are talking comfortably with your friends about a specific product, the next thing you know, it pops out as an ad in your phone? or when you meet people with familiar faces, and the next thing you know, they are in the “people you may know” section?

These situations made me wonder, are they listening to my conversations? look through my search histories?

Surprisingly, they do not look at our private messages, use our phone’s microphone to listen to us or sell our data to advertisers.

In the future, what if they decided to make these things happen with our consent? For instance, if they are planning a new feature to create a “dating app” feature inside Facebook. Our chances of meeting and connecting with people naturally would be contaminated and transformed into an artificial one indeed, isn’t it scary? knowing that Facebook is really good at predicting customer’s buying patterns, and implementing this strategy to help us connect with people they thought would match with us, then how we meet people would be based on Facebook’s targeting expertise. Sure, people may find their soulmate quicker but there will be no more cute cheesy love stories.

So to conclude my speculation. For the year 2050, I think the most common phrase would be “I met my husband/wife from Facebook”

  1. I have had advertisements pop up on Facebook that actually interests me and I have always wondered how they could acquire that kind of personal information about me.

  2. I have exactly the same experience when browsing Youtube video. They just record my every searching keyword so that next time they will recommend videos that I might be more interested in. I can understand that they do so for better user experience but sometimes it really makes me feel my privacy on internet is an issue.
